Topic: Give Honour [Thursday, 18th May 2017]
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. Mark 6:4
Christ was always on the move, and it was recorded only a few times that He went to his hometown to do miracles and teach. Two of those times it was recorded that the people were offended at Him, and He answered them thus “a prophet is not without honour, but in his own country”. This is a very concrete message to everyone of us. A sibling of yours that you’ve spent 20 years of your life with gets into ministry, and starts preaching and telling people of salvation, and living a sin-free life. This is the same sibling you’ve seen steal, fighting, being disobedient, fornicating, and all manner of things. Now be honest, if this sibling of yours comes to tell you about salvation, would you listen? Honestly, what would come to mind first would be “you that we stole that woman’s purse two months ago together?”
I can imagine the Nazarenes hearing of the wonders Christ did in countries afar, and proudly say “yes, that’s our son, he’s representing us well”. But when He came to them to share the same thing, they were offended at Him because they were too familiar with him. In Mark 6:3 they observed “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.” They knew him to the very last detail, so they didn’t believe He could do anything.
This is a message to us, not to get too familiar with ministers we’ve known that we miss out on the very vital blessing they have for us. We should know that God can use anyone to bless us, and no matter how much of their dirt we know, God will still us them. It is left to us to be sensitive, have faith in God and receive our portion of such blessings. It is clearly recorded in Mark 6:5 that “he could there do no mighty work.” Do not let too much familiarity be the reason you miss out on your blessings. Scripture says test all spirits (1 John 4:1). If after testing the spirit by the word, you find it authentic, believe and receive your blessing.

Dear Father, help me not to despise your servant because of familiarity. And help me always trust in You, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
