Topic: Hearken to Instructions [Sunday, 19th March 2017]

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth. Deuteronomy 28:1

As growing believers, we live by the Word of God. His Word grooms and prunes us to be better and more effective (2 Timothy 4:2). Now we know that the Word of God stretches beyond the Bible, as it were, to instructions God gives to us from time to time. Now, for one reason or another, we may not want to heed some of such instructions, because they may “shame” or offend our sense of pride. This is disobedience, which is rebellion, and we’ve been told in scripture that rebellion is as witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:23). And we also know the consequence of witchcraft (Exodus 22:18). That is however not our focus. Our focus is the benefit of adhering to the instructions of God.

Firstly, adhering to instructions set you high above all nations (Deuteronomy 28:1). This simply means that God will honour you among men. If you continue reading to verse 13, all the blessings laid for keeping His commandments are stated, which is, crowned by “and the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shall be above only, and thou shall not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day; to observe and to do them”

Secondly, John 8:51 says “verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man keep my saying , he shall never see death”. In Luke 6:46-49, Christ gives us an illustration of what it is like for those who hearken to him, and those who don’t, thus: “why do you call Me, Lord, Lord, and do not [practice ] what I tell you? For everyone who comes to Me and listens to My words [in order to heed their teaching] and does them, I will show you what he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug and went down deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when a flood arose, the torrent broke against that house and could not shake or move it, because it had been securely built or founded on a rock. But he who merely hears and does not practice doing My words is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the torrent burst, and immediately it collapsed and fell, and the breaking and ruin of that house was great.” It pays to hearken to God’s instructions. Harken to the instructions found in God’s Word always.

Keep winning daily.

Prayer:

Dear Father, for every Word You speak, thank You. Give me grace, I pray, not to ignore Your Word for whatever reason, that I may be upon the solid foundation of Your Word, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
