Topic: Dealing with Low Self-esteem [Friday, 18th Nov. 2016]

I praise you because i am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful, i know that full well. Psalms 139: 14

Low self-esteem, aka lack of self-worth, is one of the major problems that most people, even believer, have to deal with. Low self-worth is one of the causes of depression. According to a study, 85% of the world’s population suffer from depression. People who commit suicide, according to the same study, have suffered from an untreated mental illness, which include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia. This is why the issue of low self-esteem must be frontally dealt with to prevent what it ultimately leads to – death by suicide. Sadly, christians are not immuned to this. But, God has provided the remedy to this malaise.

Creating a new mental image of yourself is the key to boasting your self-esteem. Space will fail me to enumerate the causes of low self-esteem, but chief amongst them is having a negative mental image of yourself due to either repeated negative occurrence, a tragic event, failed relationships and marriages, hearing of negative words about yourself, etc. But as a child of God, God does not want you to continue in this downward trajectory. He wants you to think and feel good about yourself. Because having a low self-esteem is an impediment to the fulfillment your potentials in Christ.

In Jeremiah 1, Prophet Jeremiah epitomized low self-esteem. Even after God told him about how He had ordained him a prophet before he was born, he was still talking down on himself saying “I am but a child…” (vs 6) But God quickly gave him a new mental image of who he really was (vs 7-10). You need to create a new mental image of yourself. Ephesians 4:23 says: “and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” Cast down those negative thoughts and images of yourself and rebuild positive thoughts and images of yourself with God’s Word (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). You are what God says you are in His Word; a winner, a victor, a success, a can-do person, full of potentials, beautiful, handsome, and above all, a god.

Keep winning daily.

Wise Action:

Learn to always see yourself through the eyes of the scriptures. Always carry the mental image of who God’s says you are everywhere you go in His Word. Create a list of what the Word talks about you and read it aloud to yourself, at least three times every morning.
