Topic: God Judges, Not Man [September 11, 2016]
Text: Job 13:14-18
Key Verse: "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him" (Job 13:15).
One Bible verse that both Christians and non-Christians always regale to recite is Matthew 7:1, which says: "Judge not, that ye be not judged". They aptly wield this verse against critics of their actions, words or deeds. For unbelievers, their emphasis on this Scripture is to excuse their actions, words and deeds of indiscretion, sin, rebellion or heresies, which they cannot easily part with. But for Christians, it is to enthrone godly virtue to avoid erring before the sight of God who alone has the right to judge.
This does not imply that corrections should be thrown overboard, for it helps to reshape and make one a better Christian. God wants us to be cautioned, lest we slip off. The Scripture says: "if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted" (Galatians 6:1). Job's friends lacked this tact. They sharply criticized him because they felt his suffering was a just punishment for his sins. They wrongly applied a true principle, ignoring the differences in human circumstances. Believers should be careful how they judge others. Meanwhile, Job decided to defend himself because he was certain that his predicament was not due to any sin he committed. He resorted to plead with God to reason with him and alleviate his sufferings.
However, this audacity to prove his cause does not imply that we should question God over the challenges we face. The moment we go into His presence to defend ourselves, we lose our case. Rather, when we stand before Him, we should only plead with Him. The guilty will get deserved punishment, but the righteous will be shown mercy.
Thought for the day: He who is quick to judge will never be innocent.
