Maximising Family Finances by Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Author: Pastor Faith Oyedepo
Topic: Maximising Family Finances

Dear Reader,

I bring you greetings in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.  All through this month, Maximizing Family Finances is going to be the area of my focus. This week, I will be teaching on Money.

You all know that money is a very important issue in the home. So many homes, year in and year out, are broken down because of MONEY. The root cause of many divorce cases that take place is MONEY. Many children become wayward, armed robbers, pen robbers or thieves because of MONEY. Relatives, in-laws, etc, come between married couples. Why? Because of MONEY!

Money is a Defence

Money is a defence and it is simply a medium of exchange. The Word of God says: For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence… (Ecclesiastes 7:12). Money is required to live comfortably on earth. It is a defence because with it, you can stop shame and embarrassment from showing up in your life and home. However, handling finances is a very sensitive area for couples.

Money Seems to be Worshipped

How do you know if you are possessed with the love for money? It normally appears in miserly, greed, covetousness, being tight-fisted and exhibiting selfish behaviour with money. You worship money when you clutch it, refusing to disperse it, but gathering it for your selfish purposes. The Word of God says: …The LOVE of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10).

This is idolatry and idolatry is a sin. Whatever or whoever you serve, outside of God is idolatry. These are traits that expose the love for money in the heart of a man. The rich man Jesus spoke to in Matthew 19:21 was a lover of money and possessions. At the prompting of the Lord Jesus to sell all he had and give, he became downcast in his heart. When offering time comes in church, are you downcast because you don’t want to let go of your money? When your children or spouse asks for money, are you downcast? Do you get angry? The Word of God says: But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful… (Matthew 19:22).

The rich man turned down the riches of heaven Jesus was offering him because of the love of money. Money had become his god. Money was no longer servant to him but dictated his lifestyle. There’s nothing you should not be able to easily release to God if He asks for it. If not, that thing has now become your god. It is only God that we can’t do without. Only the worship of the Lord is satisfying; worshipping money leaves you dissatisfied. When you crave for money, trouble, pains and sorrow break forth.

Money needs to be handled faithfully

If you are not faithful in handling money, God cannot and will not put into your hands the true riches. You need to be faithful to be able to lay hold on your inheritance in Christ Jesus, which includes long life, joy, prosperity, abundance, sound health, etc. These are true riches which money can’t buy. You must be able to faithfully handle money to know and have the right use of money. Make sure everyone under your roof is adequately taught on the right use of money

As believers in Christ Jesus and the light (or example) to the world, money and how to use it must be clearly understood. The Lord Jesus showed His interest in money matters by speaking certain parables concerning money. He also likened the Kingdom of heaven, in some of His parables, to some methods of handling money by some individuals. He indicated that the true riches of God are only entrusted to those who have a proper perspective of handling money because more money will not be entrusted into your hands from God.

Many are not blessed by God because they handle money foolishly. That is why He cannot trust (bless) them with more money. The Lord said: He that is faithful in little will be made ruler over much (Matthew 25:21 & 23). If the Lord Jesus can trust that you won’t worship money, He will bless you with so much money that you will have more than enough to use and to give for the expansion of His Kingdom on earth. In the Bible days, people sold their lands, properties, etc. and brought the money for the expansion of the Kingdom of God (Acts 2:44-45; 4:34-35). Husbands and wives quarrel at home all because of money; but you can make it a rule in your family to refuse to worship money.

Also, at the end of the day an account shall be given of how you spent what was entrusted into your hands on earth. Won’t it be sad to be counted as selfish, greedy or a waster? May the Lord grant you understanding!

Do you want to worship God? Then surrender your life to Him today. If you are ready to surrender your life to Him, please say this prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”
