Topic: The Ultimate Victory [Wednesday May 25, 2016]

Text: 2 Samuel 10:6-19

Key Verse: “And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more” (2 Samuel 10:19).

During his reign as king of Israel, David had many confrontations with the people of Syria. The Israelites constantly struggled against the Syrians until King David was given the ability by God to defeat and control these people. This final defeat was between 1050 BC and 1090 BC. When Hadarezer’s armies were defeated, the other Syrian kings under his rule quickly made peace with Israel.

“When a man’s way please the LORD, He maketh his enemies to be at peace with him” (Proverbs 16:7). God had given King David victory wherever he went, defeating the Syrian forces. From this passage, we learnt that those who are at war with the Son of David are but in a futile war. God has forces to send against those that set His wrath at defiance, which will convince them that none ever hardened his heart against Him and prospered. Christ’s soldiers should strengthen one another’s hands in their spiritual warfare. Let nothing be wanting in us, whatever the success. When we are conscientious in our duty, we may, with satisfaction, leave the event with God, assuredly hoping for His salvation in His own way and time. An abiding lesson is instructive in this passage: avoid the sin of rewarding evil for good like Hanun, for this is contrary to the word of God.

Another important lesson can be found in Joab’s response to a very hard battle situation. He encouraged Abishai to be of good courage and play the men. We also need to fight the battle of this life with courage, having complete trust in the God of all battles.

Thought for the day: When a man’s way pleases the Lord, He makes his enemies to be at peace with him.
