Text: Ezekiel 7:1-9

Key Verse: “And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD” (Ezekiel 7:4).

There are many danger signs on our roads intended at getting drivers to reduce their speed for their own safety. These include signs about dangerous bends, rocks falling, animals crossing, ongoing road repairs, and many more.

These signs are usually ignored by some drivers who for wanting to arrive early at their destinations, willfully violate them. Many have lost their lives in the process. From our text, prophet Ezekiel was told to inform the Israelites that their end was very near. It was a warning of imminent danger. God was so angry with them that He gave them over unto their enemies. What provoked this was their abominations. God threatened to recompense them according to their ways. Before now, Israel had enjoyed the goodness of the Lord in the Promised Land.

They apparently took God for granted, threw all caution into the air and started imbibing the ways of the heathen nations around them. They even committed more abominations in the land than the nations that were there before them, to the extent that the righteous God could no longer bear with them. Mercifully, this was a kind of final warning; Israel could still repent and turn away from their sins in order to avoid the displeasure of God. No matter how low one might have fallen, he could still repent and be restored. But he must seek the Lord while He may be found and call upon Him while He is still near. Delay in doing this can be dangerous as the day of God’s wrath is merely a breadth away.

Thought for the day: As each day unfolds, so does the frightening day of the Lord.
